Trying to balance caring for an aging parent with the demands of your own job, spouse, and children can feel overwhelming. Many caregivers struggle with feeling like they’re dropping balls and letting people down even as they’re doing their best.
As the owner of Pearl’s Placements for Seniors, I’ve helped many families navigate the challenges of juggling parent care with other responsibilities.
Here are some tips:
Seek Accommodations at Work
Talk openly with your employer about your caregiving role. See if you can adjust your schedule to work from home on certain days, take time off for medical appointments, shift your hours, or other accommodations. Most companies aim to work with employees navigating these situations.
Get Support from Your Spouse
Have an open and honest conversation with your spouse about shared responsibilities and how you’ll cover gaps when your time is taken up with caring for your parent. Come up with a plan together so you support each other emotionally and practically.
Involve Your Kids
Give your children age-appropriate tasks like making cards to brighten your parent’s day or helping prepare meals to bring over. Teens can assist with errands. This teaches compassion while including them so they don’t feel left out.
Take Breaks When Needed
When you’ve reached your limit, ask a sibling or close family friend to provide respite for a day so you can fully recharge. Taking breaks prevents resentment and burnout.
Set Clear Boundaries
Be clear with family and work about when you are and aren’t available for non-urgent requests. Pushing yourself to exhaustion benefits no one. Prioritize essential caregiving tasks only during busy times.
Stay Organized
Keep track of medical appointments, important contacts, and caregiving notes on a calendar or in an organized binder. Having everything recorded in one spot avoids forgetting obligations and helps you stay on top of responsibilities.
Accept Imperfection
Let go of chasing perfection in all aspects of life. Some days caregiving will take priority over household chores or work projects. Give yourself grace knowing you're doing the best you can in the moment.
Please know you don’t have to navigate this alone. As your local senior care advisor, I’m here to consult about solutions like respite care, adult day programs, or in-home health assistance to ease the burden so you can devote time to all that matters.
You’ve got this!
